Over at Kingstown

I've just spent the morning over at Kingstown Radio's studios in Hull, where several of the Seaside FM presenters have been on a training course. Note I say studios plural: they have two studios there. Luxury!

East Yorkshire author Jack Everett

Today's guest on the show was author Jack Everett, whose new book Death and Taxes is now available. Jack has written science fiction, historical fiction, and his fantasy novel for young adults Merlin's Kin was described as 'more grown up than Harry Potter, less serious than Pullman with shades of Narnia'.
Jack's books can purchased from Archimedes Press, Littleoaks, Busk Lane, Church Fenton, LS24 9RJ, and postage is free if you mention this station.

But is it a poem?

Susan joined me on the show today, and we discussed this article in last Sunday's Observer: campaigners from the Queen's English Society say that before something can be called a poem, it has to meet certain standards such as having rhyme and metre.
Sounds to me like somebody's out there with a clipboard, checking poetry to see if it comes up to standard or not. Here at Seaside FM we disagree with this approach. Susan read a selection of poems, her own, and also some by Tennyson among others. Not all of them rhymed.
And if you were listening, I regaled you with this short and sweet one by Adrian Mitchell.

Mother's day competition

Not content with just one Mothers' Day competition at Seaside FM, the Hello Holderness team have got a wash and set (or whatever it's called: some pampering, basically) at The Stylist's hairdressers on Queen Street in Withernsea to give away. To enter, just email us with the answer to this simple question: Name the hairstyle that Amy Winehouse made popular. Answers to info@seasideradio.co.uk before next week's show, marking your subject line 'Hello Holderness'.
Today's show, presented by Katie, Paul, and me (Joachim), had a definite entertainment slant to it.

Flooding report, scrapbooks, and chips

On this afternoon's show, Kirstie interviewed Paul Temple, Vice President of the National Farmers' Union, about the problems facing farmers in the area after the recent flooding. Paul gave his reaction to today's meeting between the NFU and the Environment Agency.
Katie shared her recent discovery of the world of scrapbooking, and spoke to Scrapbook Inspirations about it.

Hello Holderness!

We had a packed show on Hello Holderness tonight: three studio guests, and three interviews on the phone!
First up was Chris Berry from acoustic covers band CMC, who came in to chat about his experiences playing and recording, and also played us a few tracks from his CD. You can hear more of Chris and his band on his MySpace.
Local farmer Charlie Hill from Skeffling has found a new line: turning scrap metalwork into original artwork, or 'scrap art'. Charlie also told us about the problems that farmers in the area are having with recent flooding, which is compounding problems caused last summer.
The residents of Burton Pidsea were affected by flooding over Christmas, so the landlady of the Nancy Inn has decided to run Christmas all over again, with a special dinner on Sunday. She told Kirsty all about it over the phone.

Panto season!

Yesterday, an intrepid team of people gathered at the studios of Seaside FM to put on a panto. I don't know if any of this came across on the air, but it was a fairly hectic day, with several hours of casting, rehearsals, and other preparations leading up to the live performance at 1pm. No legs were broken in the production of this play!
Work for this began back in November of last year. The idea of a panto was suggested by Lois, Mary, and Judith, members of the Withernsea Writers who are regular guests on my show (Thursday afternoons. Tune in!). They had the plot already written, and a couple of scenes. I went along to their meetings to help get the script finished in time, mostly as typist, though I can lay claim to a few of the jokes.
