Blimey! What a busy day!?!

Howdy!

It's Monday morning, my eyes are bloodshot, I'm exhausted, and I'm back doing my 'proper' job! Yesterday was the day of the big show and this week it was a particularly manic one!

Kevin Young from the group Colleen's Fancy came in for a chat about his new Tuesday night folk music show and their new album.

Then Adam, Masked Dan and the rest of comedy group "ThereplicagooseEgg" came in. To be honest, I thought it would be one guy but all of them turned up! This meant a bit of male bonding around the one guest mic that we have! The lads stayed for about an hour, and explained how the random name "Thereplicagoosegg" came about and explained a little more about their show. I must admit, it was very odd (maybe a little erotic!?) talking to someone in a green wrestling mask!

Two new presenters started on Sunday, and there both dam good! Firstly, we have Dave Rymer who played some great new and alternative music. He's on before me if you want to give him a listen, his show starts at 10am. Then after I've done my bit, Tom Robinson takes over with Juke Box Gold between 6 and 7pm and then some great country music on Coastline Country between 7 and 9pm. I've worked with Tom before on both Radio Medica in Goole and Kingstown Radio in Hull, so it was great to work with him again, I know how dedicated he when it comes to doing great sounding local radio. I had a chat with Tom on air before he started.

After the show, I legged it to the "Carnivale 69" event at Durty Nellies pub where Masked Dan from ThereplicagooseEgg was hosting the night. The gig was sold out, so I knew it pub was going to be packed and I'd probably have to stand. However, when I got to the bar and purchased my usual Southern Comfort & Coke I noticed a loan empty table, yes! I can sit down! The only thing was this tablle was right at the front, infact it was practically on the stage! The comics would almost be sat on my knee if I decided to sit there and not only that, I'm bound to be a target for having the p*ss taken out of me. Hmmmmmm, I pondered for what musthave been 10 minutes, yes or no? Should i or should i?! In the end, I decided that the weekend had taken its toll on me and I needed to sit down so i did....and I was fine until Russell Kane came on! I'll tell you what he said in a minute, as there were two other acts before he came on.

Masked Dan introduced a lady called Shirley Higton, a singer songwriter who performed some well written funny songs on keyboard and to be honest I thought she was a refreshing change. In fact, I liked her music so much that I invited Shirley on the show so you can hear her for yourself. She'll be performing some numbers live on 3rd February. Keep checking my show page for more details.

Next on the bill was a new comic called Mick Mcgrath, and I've got to be honest I didn't quite get his humour and it seems nobody else did either! Still, he's new and I'm sure he'll get better either that or he could be a plumber or something like that.

Then it was the moment everyone had been waiting for, it was the turn of Russell Kane. Now, to be honest I didn't know much about him really. All I knew was that he was one of the presenters of Big Brother's Big Mouth last summer and he has done something on BBC Radio 2, so I asked Masked Dan what he was like. Dan he said he was a bit like Lee Evans, this worried me as I'm not a massive fan. Still, when he came on I was relieved to see that he wasn't a quivering nervous wreck sweating buckets like Lee Evans at all, he was actually very good, although he couldn't keep still so I suppose that part was a bit like Lee Evans!

Now, sitting at the front as I were, I knew I was going to get picked on at some point and inevitably it happened. "Whats his name" he asked my friend "Mike" he replied, "..and, what does Mike do?" "erm...he's...a....DJ!" he said. So, then came the jokes about DJs, and Russell said "Oh, I bet you put on a DJ voice don't you Mike?" then, he shoves the microphone in my face and said "go on Mike, say: and now here's The Scissor Sister'!", (bear in mind that at this late stage in the night I have had several Southern Comforts & Coke) I blerted out "Now, here's the Sc-s-s-scissor s-s-sisters" like a stammering drunken fool! So, Russell then made several jokes about stuttering DJs and asked if I ever played "Nineteen" by Paul Hardcastle as it goes n-n-n-n-nineteen! I tell you what actually, I've always had a problem saying Aretha Franklin, every time I say her first name it sounds like I'm saying "urethra", which is something completely different?! Still, it got a laugh and I don't mind looking daft in aid of good comedy. But I would like to point out the folowing:

  • 1. I am not a DJ, I am a radio presenter, and
  • 2. I wouldn't be caught dead playing the Scissor Sisters or whatever they're called anyway!

It was a great night and I'm looking forward to the next one, keep listening to The Mike Brown Radio Show for further details. Support local comedy, its a right laugh!

Take Care & see you Sunday at two,
Mike Brown.
