The University of Hull's Department of Drama, come this February 2010, is proud to present "Mankind".

Posted December 8th, 2009 by Justin
This late fifteenth century morality play is celebrated for it dramatic vitality and fascinating structure, featuring much clowning, dramatic counterpoint and ingenious staging, it is one of the greatest early English plays.
The plot features the traditional psychomachia or battle for humanity's soul. But the traditional pieties intoned by the priest Mercy seem to be no match for the jigs, japes, lewd antics and scatology of the Vices: agents of the World, the Flesh and the Devil. Their festive merriment ensares not only the eponymous Mankind but also the spectators, thanks to some transgressive audience participation.
Suddenly the mood darkens. The carnival is over; a fight breaks out. Violence, loss and pain remain. Mankind is left to face up to the serious consequences of misdeeds and to bitterly rue his repeated transgressions.
Can there be any redemption?
