Mike Brown meets Shirley Higton
Me with Shirley Higton in the studio.
Shirley Higton is a piano teacher by profession, but is also a singer-songwriter and she hails from Bridlington in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Many of my songs Shirley writes are humorous takes on local news stories and last year she wrote a song for the 'Save Bridlington Hospital' campaign called 'Cost Effective'.
Shirley brought her keyboard with her and performed 'Cost Effective' on the show. It's a satirical ditty about the cut backs at Bridlington Hospital and she actually sent a copy of 'Cost Effective' to the Health Secretary - Alan Johnson, along with a letter complaining about the lack of local hospital services.
'Cost Effective is also available on CD from Shirley for £3 - plus 50p package and posting, proceeds go to the Macmillan Wolds unit at Bridlington Hospital and the 'Save Bridlington Hospital' campaign. To purchase the 6 track CD, contact Shirley Higton on (01262) 604866 or email her on willowstudio@gmail.com
Shirley told me that she also writes songs for the Bridlington Free Press, you can hear some of them here. She has also written songs about my old mate James Hoggarth from BBC Radio Humberside and The Bridlington Spa, as well as some rather rude songs, ooerr missus!
More about the show and the guests we've had on can be found on the Mike Brown Radio Show page of the Seaside FM website.
