Here is a selection of local events from Seaside FM's What's On Where guide for August 2010:

  • Sunday 1st August 2010

    • The Hornsea Floral Hall Antique & Collectors Fair runs from 9.00am to 4.00pm. Call (01482) 893266 or (01964) 611317 for details.
    • Ryehill Companion Dog Show takes place at Ryehill Village Hall, Ryehill, between Thorngumbald and Keyingham from 9.30am. There will be various classes and competitions, including their first Scamps Heat. The dog that wins will qualify for the Scamps Final in St. Neots later in the year and will be in the final line up for "Surpreme Champion". There will be prizes galore, a tombola, a raffle, hot food and trade stands.     • The second day of the exhibition to celebrate the 200th anniversary of a lifeboat being stationed at Spurn Head takes place between 11.00am and 4.00pm at the Community Hall in Easington. Several guests have been invited, many with connections to the Spurn Head lifeboats. Historical books about the Spurn will be on sale at the exhibition.
    • Celebrate Yorkshire Day in Valley Gardens, Withernsea with music from the East Coast Big Band from around midday.
  • Monday 2nd August 2010

    • Withernsea's Christmas Lights committee will meet at Town Council Chambers, Municipal Buildings, Withernsea from 7.00pm.
  • Tuesday 3rd August 2010

    • Children can try balloon modelling, parachute games, football and face painting at Hornsea Community School as part of a summer holiday play scheme from Tuesday, August 3. The play rangers will be visiting the school with their free play sessions open to children aged 5 to 14. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 8. Parents and carers are welcome to join in with the activities if they wish. Two play sessions take place every day throughout the school summer holidays, from 10.00am to 12.30pm and 1pm to 3pm.
    • Hornsea Amateur Theatre Society present their summer Family Pantomime 'Robinson Crusoe' at The Floral Hall, Hornsea. Doors Open at 7.00pm and the show starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £6 for adults with £5 for concessions. If you can't make this performance, don't worry as it's on every Tuesday night of the school summer holidays until 31st August.
  • Wednesday 4th August 2010

    • Cheer Leading Courses begin today at Pavilion Leisure Centre in Withernsea. The course lasts for 10 weeks and teaches participants new cheer and dance skills for £35. The class for Children 6-10yrs runs between 4.00 - 5.00pm and 11-14 year old can attend between 5-6pm. Contact reception for further information or to book a place.
    • The Skirlaugh Parish Council hold their monthly meeting at the village hall 8.30pm.
  • Friday 6th August 2010

    • The new adventure playground in Withernsea is celebrating its first summer holidays with a special Playday on Friday, 6th August from 10.00am - 3.00pm.     • ABC Entertainment provide the fun in Valley Gardens in Withernsea from around midday.
    • Dave Barton Band play their unique blend of pop, funk, blues, rock and roll and originals at the Hare & Hounds, Main Street, Burstwick, HU12 9EA. Call the pub on (01964) 602070 for the evenings show times.
  • Sunday 8th August 2010

    • Join in the fun with Bernie Woods line dancing in Valley Gardens in Withernsea from around midday.
    • Withernsea's Water Safety Day takes place in and around the main promenade. It features a raft race and helicopter and lifeboat emergency service displays.
  • Monday 9th August 2010

    • Withernsea's Town Council & Memorial Gardens Trust will meet at the Town Council Chambers, Municipal Buildings, Withernsea at 7.00pm.
  • Tuesday 10th August 2010

    • The fortnightly tea dance at Pavilion Leisure Centre, in Withernsea, is on once again from 2pm. The event is an ideal way to meet new people and make friends as well as dance to old time music, with advice from experienced instructor Ray Munkley.     • Mark Thompson tinkles the ivorys at Withernsea Organ Societys Monthly concert at The Northfield Club, Waxholme Road, Withernsea, HU19 2BT. Call Margaret on (01964) 614267 for times and info.

  • Friday 13th August 2010

    • A Gene Pitney Tribute Show will take place at Hornsea Floral Hall starting at 8pm. Tickets cost £5 each or two for £9. A raffle, bar, and refreshments is included and booking is recommended. Call the box office on (01964) 532919.
  • Saturday 14th August 2010

    • Local band, The Corsairs play hits from the the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Searchers and Steelers wheel in Valley Gardens, Withernsea. The gig starts at 1.00pm.
    • If you don't catch The Corsairs in Withernsea, you can always see them in Coniston as they'll be playing at The Black Smith's Arms too. This gig starts at 8.30pm.
    • Rich T takes to the stage and provides the songs at Hare & Hounds, Main Street, Burstwick, HU12 9EA. Call the pub on (01964) 602070 for if you require more details.
    • Bad Dog play their mix of rock covers at Leven Members Club, Leven, HU17 5NF. Expect to hear songs made famous by the likes of Queen, Kings of Leon, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, Thin Lizzy, The Zutons, Jimi Hendrix and The Buzzcocks.
  • Sunday 15th August 2010

    • Fort Paull offers a display of Arms and Armour Today, giving an insight into the weapons and methods of war from the 15th to the 17th Centuries. See www.fortpaull.com for details.
    • DJ Dave plays his usual mix of music from 11.00am in Valley Gardens, Withernsea. Keyboard vocalist, Chris Myers is then on stage from 1.00pm playing music from 60s to today.
  • Monday 16th August 2010

    • The Pavilion Leisure Centre, in Withernsea, start their 'National Pool Lifeguard Qualification' (NPLQ) on Monday, 16th August. The intensive week-long course requires 100% attendance and prepares candidates in all areas of pool lifeguarding, including aquatic spinal injuries, customer care, health and safety and first aid. The course will run from 7.00am until 3.00pm each day and costs £205, which includes all tuition, course materials and exam costs. Candidates must be 16 years of age before the start of the course and must pass a basic swimming test before being allowed to take the qualification.     • Withernsea Hospital League of Friends are holding a Coffee Morning at Remars on Queen Street in Withernsea at 10.00am. There will be a Tombola, Raffle, Cake Stall and Coffee and Biscuits for £1.

    • A BBQ and Race Afternoon will be taking place at 9 St. Nicholas Gate in Hedon. Gates open at 1.30pm, with the first race getting underway at 2.00pm.     • It's Country & Western day in Withernsea's Valley Gardens as Al Kilvington and the Four Handles.... sorry I mean Fork Handles take to the stage. There will also be shootouts from the Missouri Raiders.... all together now, Yeeeeeh Haaaah!

    • Patrington Cricket Club hold their annual fun day at the Southside Cricket Ground from 10.00am until 8.00pm. There will be a Licenced Bar, a BBQ and a Parachute Display.
    • South Holderness Cricket Club are hosting something new, it's the very first 2:2 Cricket Knockout. What is 2:2 cricket? It's a fast and furious game, with 2 teams, 2 players & just 2 overs. The action will take place on a specially prepared pitch with targets and scoring zones. Games will last only 15 minutes so don't blink or you'll miss it. The day will help raise funds for the Cricket Club pavilion rebuilding project which in turn will help the Club's junior development plans.     • Why not visit Easington and watch as the 2010 Easington Bogey Race sees participants race around the village in home made go carts!? Sounds bizzare but it's all in order to raise money for Dove House Hospice.     • The annual Withernsea Summertime Special takes place in Valley Gardens. The day features a whole host of singers, bands and entertainers who will be performing from 10.00am - 10.00pm. Artists and performers include Mark's Magic Kingdom at Noon, Al Kilvington at 1.00pm, Northern Pride at 2.15pm, Triple Exposure at 3.30pm, Rapture at 4.45pm, Bad Dog at 6.00pm, Glitter Band at 7.15pm and The Searchers at 8.30pm.
    • Meanwhile, in Hedon, The MO4s play at The Queens Head pub on St. Augustine Gate. The gig starts at 8.00pm aprox.
  • Monday 30th August 2010

    • DJ Dave warms up Valley Gardens in Withernsea with his usual mix of tunes from around 11.00am, followed by vocalist Mr G who takes to the stage after lunch.
    • Paull village will hold its annual Scarecrow Festival on Bank Holiday Monday, August 30, from 10am to 5pm. A map and judging form will be available from the village hall, in Main Street, on the day. The creator of the winning scarecrow entry, which will be decided by public vote, will receive the St Andrew Cup and £10 cash. The second-placed scarecrow will get a £5 prize. Entertainment on the day includes competitions for Best Dressed Bike and Craziest Hairstyle. The village hall will be open for tea, coffee and cakes, and a wedding dress festival inside St Andrew's Church will be free to visitors.
