Mike Brown's Pub of the Week: Walters Bar in Hull, East Yorkshire

Hello you!

It's been a while, but in the run up to Christmas I thought I'd start up my pub of the week again, well I though you might need some ideas of places to celebrate in!

My first pub in this batch is the award winning Walters, a gem of a bar on Scale Lane in Hull's old town.

About Walters

The pub takes it name from a barber's shop which traded at the same premises in the 1820s, sometime later it became Venn brasserie where you could buy a tiny piece of steak for about 25 quid... and I was stupid enough to do so!

I'm please to say that the building has been put to much better use since Alan Murphy and Chrissy Fleming took over and turned it into a contemporary bar in 2007. Since then, Walter's has gained a reputation as Hull's drinking mecca selling a big choice of real ales, real ciders, continental beers, wines and spirits.

Once inside, you'll see that Walters is a long, narrow, modern bar with red vinyl seeting in the seeting area and chairs at the bar. On the walls you'll see album sleeves from the likes of The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Clash and some more obscurer groups and of course the all important wine and ale list, which is lovingly hand written in chalk on blackboards. The bar is relaxed and welcoming with a wooden floor and big mirror at the end of the room, but otherwise fairly minimalist without being too clinical.

Walters has a loyal customer base, which range from office workers during the day and after work to real-ale and real-cider types who prop up the bar later in the day.

Drinks at Walters

  • REAL ALES: There's no less than eight regularly changing guest ales including the locally produced Great Newsome Brewery, Copper Dragon, Sleaman, Nethergate Brewery, Titanic Brewery and some that have even been brewed by the owner himself!
  • REAL CIDERS: Scrumpys come from various producers in the South West, although you may see one or two from the East of England occasionally. Most recently I've seen names like Hecks, Rich's, Solway, West Croft, Gwynt Y Ddraig, Wilcox, Ben Crossman's, Wilkins, Moorlands Farm, Westons, Ross on Wye and Skidbrooke Cyder on their six cider hand pulls.
  • BOTTLES BEERS: Bottled beers come from various locations around the globe, you'll see come from Timmermans, Brahma, Carib, Harbin, Coopers, Victoria, Fruli, Kwak, Leffe, Tuborg, Efes, Asahi, Cusquena, Castle, Singha, Michelob, Coors, Miller, Desperados, Paulaner, Steinhauser and Cobra among many, many others.
  • ON TAP: The varied list includes Erdinger, Becks, Liefmans, Paulaner, Peroni and Fruli Strawberry Beer as well as Guinness and Stella for the less adventurous!
  • WINES: Wines range from £11 to £45 a bottle and there's around 20 whites and 20 reds to choose from.

As of yet, walters don't do food, and with all those drinks to look after maybe it is asking too much? However, if you happen to be passing by on a Friday after work, you'll be treated to some complimentary sandwiches!

This is the perfect bar to push the boat out in and sample something a little different to the normal drinks like Fosters lager or Woodpecker cider as you certainalty won't find them here! For opening hours and information call the pub on (01482) 224004.

Cheers!
Mike.
