Mike Brown's Pub of the Week: Railway Inn in New Ellerby, East Yorkshire

Howdy!
This weeks pub of the week is The Railway Inn in the small hamlet of New Ellerby.
I imagine your first question is going to be "where the hells New Ellerby?" Well, New Ellerby is located 8 miles north east of Hull, 1.5 miles east of Skirlaugh and about 10 miles north west of Withernsea. Together with its neighbour Old Ellerby, it forms the civil parish of Ellerby and has around 100 houses. New Ellerby was served by Burton Constable railway station on the Hull and Hornsea Railway, but last train puffed past back in 1964. Despite this, The Railway Inn remains a popular choice for good-value pub food. One of the specialities being the home-made Steak, Turkey and Steak, Kidney and Ale Pies which comes from a traditional recipe handed down through three generations of the landlady's family.
Unfortunately for me, I had meat pie the night before, so really wanted something different. I opted for a Meat Lasagne (£7.50) and a starter of Battered Brie Wedges (£3.50). The batter on the brie was fantastically light and very tasty, almost like it had come from a chip shop... but better. It was served with Cranberry Sauce and garnish. The homemade lasagne was nice too and came with a portion of chip shop style chips, carrots and peas.
As well as the pies and meat lasagne, the main menu also has Poached Salmon Fillet, Scampi, Haddock, Fishermans Platter, Fresh Battered Plaice, Barbeque Chicken Bacon & Cheese Melt, Curry (chicken or veg), Mushroom Stroganoff, Homemade Vegetable Pie, Homemade Cheese & Onion flan, Vegetable Lasagne, Broccoli & Stilton Bake and various Omelettes.
On a Sunday, you can choose from Beef, Pork, Turkey or Mixed Meat Sunday Roast, all of which are served with veg, potatoes and a homemade Yorkshire pudding. There is also a childrens menu consisting of Chicken Nuggets, Sausage, Egg, Haddock, Scampi and Ham all served with chips and bean or peas. As well as a smaller version of the Sunday lunches.
This isn't the place to come if you're a real ale or real cider lover as I am, but if you can put up with the likes of Stella (4%), Boddingtons, Guiness and Blackthorn on draught and a few bottled ales then it's worth a visit for the food.
It's open for lunch and dinner, Tuesday to Sunday with a restaurant that seats 80 diners with room for another 80 in the bar area.
If you visit The Railway and happen to like the food at the Railway, you'll be pleased to know that the same people own the Whittington and Cat in Hull town centre, so you can expect the same quality of food there.
I may even go back for a pie!
Cheers!
Mike.
