Howdy!

For this weeks pub of the week I visited Hull's old town and stopped of at Nellys Bar, a former Irish Bar which has recently seen a new lease of life.

Prior, to refurbishment, the pub was known as "Durty Nellys" and was decorated with various memorabilia, mostly consisting of Guinness signs, Guninness posters, infact, anything Guninness! Surely the Irish are famous for other things than just Guinness alone? As much as the theme was loved by the the regulars, it was badly in need of some attention as it had become run down and in need of a spring clean... just because it was durty by name it shouldn't be dirty by nature!

After new ownership, the pub was given a fresh lick of paint, new signage, comfier seating and a better range of drinks including real ales and real ciders, as well as a very impressive range of whiskeys which seduce you from the back bar. If those drinks weren't enough, the licensee tells me that plans are in place for a microbrewery in the pub - meaning they'll be able to brew own beers, which is good news for ale lovers everywhere!

What more could you want? Food perhaps? Well, yes, they have that covered too as they've recently started a lunch-time and tea-time menu. This is perfect for folk like me who work in the town centre and fancy chilling out over a pint and a bite to eat at the end of a stressful day in the office. That said, I haven't eaten at Nellys yet, although I thoroughly intend to... infact, by the the time you read this I probably will have!

At the moment food is served from 12.00pm until 2.30pm and 5.00pm until 7.00pm Monday to Friday and 12.00pm until 2.30pm on Saturdays and Sundays. On my last visit, the mains menu consisted of Fresh Fish & Chips, Homemade Chicken & Mushroom Pie, Chilli Con Carne and Thai Fishcakes, however this does change from day to day.

To find Nellys, head for the old town and one you arrive at Lowgate, look for Jaz bar, the street down the side is called Scale Lane, walk to the bottom towards the River Hull, don't go to far or you'll get wet! You're now on Hull's famous High Street and you should be looking straight at Nellys Bar. The address is 48 High Street, Hull, HU1 1QE and you can call the pub on (01482) 225212.

Cheers!
Mike.
