Howdy!

This weeks POTW is a real family pub in Hedon called The Haven Arms... but, the clever folk reading this will already have realised that from the title of the blog!

It was a miserable, cold and frosty Sunday morning, made twice as bad by the night before. Whilst thinking of cures I decided I needed a pick me up and what better than a hearty Sunday roast?

Why The Haven Arms? Well, I've often frequented the pub for a drink (or two), and seen customers plates with almost mountain-like portions on them whilst watching from the bar... with this glorious image in my mind, off I went in search off beef, yorkshire puddings and trimmings.

When you arrive at The Haven Arms you'll notice a large car park which is great if you're taking out the family for lunch/tea/whatever. The added bonus is that it's located in peaceful setting, off the main road and away from the town. In the summer the grass areas which surround the pub are often used for bouncy castles and sometimes it's own marquee is erected for special occasions.

The carvery is served in the side room by Mark - a pleasant chap who looks the part by wearing chef whites and a big chef's hat - you know like the Swedish chef on the muppets? Google him if you don't remember!

There's a choice of at least 3 roast meats & fresh vegetables and it's served every Sunday from 12 noon onwards, with an extra all day carvery on most bank holiday Mondays too.

I was glad to be able to wash down my carvery with some local ale as Haven Arms serves beers from Great Newsome, a local brewery based at South Frodingham near Winestead. The bar also sold Moorlands Farm Cyder, which is made by a former cattle farmer in North Newbald. So, it seems this pub is doing its bit to support local businesses, which in this day and age can only be a good thing.

Talking of cider, the last time I visited was during their annual cider festival, and I have to say, it's always a highlight of my year as some of the scrumpies available really have been sourced from the ends of the earth... well Devon and Somerset anyway. For me, nothing is better than sitting outside of a pub with some nice views and sipping on something a little different... ahh if it weren't so damn cold I'd be able to close my eyes and imagine I was back there. There is also regular real ale festivals, so don't worry if you're not a cider man like me everyone seems to get a look in at this pub.

The bar area has a darts board, pool table and through the back is an outdoor undercover area too.

Just a word of warning, don't be put off by the first impressions of the building, it's almost 200 years old for gawd sake so may well look a little run down in places, it's what's inside that counts, and what is inside is certainatly ecclectic and offers something for everyone. If your ever in the area why not pop in and try it.

Cheers!
Mike.
