Mike Brown's Pub Of The Week: The Black Swan in Brandesburton

Mike Brown's picture

This week, I ventured up to the Hare & Hounds in Leven, a pub which has numerous signs up outside saying that they serve "Delicious Pub Food". Unfortunatly, when I asked what food they had on, the reply was "we don't do food!" So, my Pub Of The Week isn't them, sorry guys!

Instead, we ventured further up the road until we got to Brandesburton. There are two public houses in the village, one being 'The Dacre Arms' (I've been there before) and the other being 'The Black Swan' which is situated on Main Street.

The Black Swan is one of those 18th Century 'ye olde black and white' style pubs with a large bar down one side of the pub and a games type area on the other side. At the back of The Black Swan is a function room, which looked like it doubles up as a overspill if the dining area is busy.

The food menu was much much bigger than anyone I had seen in any local pubs before, it had a dedicated Chicken section and some of the food seemed to have a mexican twist to it! It's one of those menus where Gordon Ramsey would march in and say "F**k me, that menus too big" and he would then proceed to cut it down and replace it with the USUAL boring stuff which is available everywhere you go!

Anyway, we ordered a 'Chicken Duo' at £9.65 and a 'Steak & Chicken Combo' at £8.45 which tooook around 20 minutes to come to our tables. When the waitress brought the food to our table, the meals were hot, well presented and tasted as good as they looked!

The Chicken Duo, which was Tandoori style chicken pices and a Cajun Chicken breast served with Rice, Chips, a Salad.... and Peas! I couldn't quite believe just how much was on my plate! Still, it was worth it and I had a good shot at trying to finish it!

The Cajun Chicken breast on the Steak & Chicken Combo (as well as the one on the duo) seemed to be in the chef's own marinade, we though this was much better than all of the 'bought in' pre-packed stuff you usually get. The Steak which accompanied it came cooked 'Medium-Well' just as we requested, something I'm quite picky about!

Well done to the manager, chef, or whoever it was who decided to be bold and try some different food in a pub, it was a refreshing change and I suggest you try it for yourself!

The Black Swan seemed to belongto the Marston's pubco, which surprised me as most of their pubs have the same bland decor. This pub is much nicer and it's good that they have kept the traditional look and feel of the place. For a picture of the exterior click here.
