Mike Brown meets Liberty Stands
Me with Scott and Craig from the band Liberty stands.
Scott plays guitar and Craig is lead vocalist and also plays guitar with this relitively new local group. The other members are Nathan who plays drums and Dann who sings and plays bass, they where missing presumed lying in a gutter!
If you are a regular follower of the new band scene in East Yorkshire you may have already heard of 'Liberty Stands' as they have already performed at 'The Sesh' at Linnet and Lark, 'Mugwump' at Sharkeys and 'The Sidekicks Lounge' at The Lamp.
The band describe their music as “melodic indie rock, fused with catchy guitar riffs and head-splitting lyrics” and their influences come from a wide range of guitar heros including The Stones, The Kinks, The Beatles, The Doors, Motley Crue, Stone Roses, My Chemical Romance... and Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin for some reason!
When I asked Craig about his obvious love of The Rat Pack, he told me that he thought the music back then was better crafted and both the lyrics and production sounded better. I suggested a cover of "The Theme From New York New York" expecting Liberty Stands to be too cool to do such a thing, but they loved the idea of it! Nutters!
During the interview, I got the pair to do some acoustic tracks for us. I'd have loved for them to do more but being a basic studio set up it would be unfair to ask any band to do anymore, maybe one day though eh? The songs that Liberty Stands did for us were "Rat Race", "Yellow Song" and "Hangman".
I have to take my hat off to the boys, particularly Craig as he continued to play on after one of his guitar strings snapped! They simply looked at each other, smirked and then played on, youv'e got to admire their proffesionalism!
After Craig and Scott had done their thing, a few listeners contacted the show to say what they thought. One email said they sounded good and that she liked the sound of guitars and one said that they sounded like Razorlight, the boys reply to this was that they should go and see the group live. This was something they thought I should do as well after I listened to a rough demo on their myspace site, I told them they sounded like The Strokes and they just looked at me blank!!
