Mike Brown's Pub of The Week: The New Clarence in Hull

Hi all
It's time for another Pub Of The Week and this week it's a Hull pub that has something for everyone!
I'm talking about The New Clarence which is situated in Hull City Centre, it's quite well hidden if your not used to the area, but just ask for directions as most Hull folk will know The Clarence. The original Clarence actually stood on the opposite side of the street to the current pub, a site now occupied by flats. The New Clarence has been converted from what was an old Co-op building on the corner of Charles and John Streets.
Rather unusually for a pub, The Clarence boasts it's own Weight Watchers menu. The menu consists of all the usual favorites like Lasagne, Chilli Con Carne, and even a smaller portion of the Steak from the main menu. Each dish also clearly indicates the points value, meaning that you don't need to bring your calculators along girls! This ties in with the Weight Watchers meeting which is held at the pub every Tuesday between 12 noon and 1pm.
The New Clarence is renowned for home cooked food and the size of the portions, and my choice on the day of my visit was no exception. I opted for "The New Clarence Mixed Grill" as I was a little peckish, and certainatly not on a diet! The platter was loaded with Steak, grilled gammon, pork chop, liver, lincolnshire pork sausage, black pudding, grilled tomato, fried mushrooms, onion rings, vegetables and chips, all for 9.95 and it was all good.
I'm told that wherever possible, the boss tries to buy food from local suppliers, and this is evident as all of the food I have tried at The New Clarence always tastes good and not like it has come out of a packet, like at some places!
The New Clarence serves food everyday until 7pm, the busier times are as you'd expect at lunch times and tea times.
On a Friday Night, some of the areas top singers and songwriters perform at the pubs regular acoustic night. The rest of the time the pub shows football or rugby on their various screens, not being a sporting type I choose to avoid The Clarence on those nights, but each to thier own eh!?
All of the usual drinks, spirits and wines are for sale, as well as at least two hand pull real ales, these tend to be Tetley's and a guest ale. The New Clarence also has a good range of hot and cold non alcoholic drinks for those of you who are driving or who have maybe nipped across on your dinner hour.
You can contact The New Clarence on 01482 320327 for more details, and you can even ring ahead to pre-order your meal if your in a rush.
Cheers!
Mike Brown.
