Three community projects in Hornsea have been completed, using a combined total of £21,811.40 from East Riding of Yorkshire Council as part of Commuted Sums from local housing developments.

Hornsea Town Council received £10,000 from Commuted Sums towards the replacement of exercise equipment in Hall Garth Park. The town council also received £12,640 from The Sandsfield Community Fund towards the £22,640 total project cost.

The works saw Hornsea Town Council replace the existing exercise equipment in the park which was out of date and had come to the end of its natural life. The facility is well used and is open seven days a week. The new equipment will ensure the Town Council better quality and more diverse exercise equipment, which will support new and existing users.

Joanna Richardson, Clerk to Hornsea Town Council, said: "We now have an excellent outdoor gym which can be used free of charge by residents and visitors to improve health and fitness and to have fun in the fresh air. Hopefully this project emphasises this council's continued commitment to improving the outdoor environment for all our residents. Hornsea Town Council would like to thank East Riding of Yorkshire Council for the invaluable funding support on this scheme."

Hornsea Bowling Club has also completed the works, having been awarded £6,848.80 from Commuted Sums to make improvements to the club and purchase green maintenance machinery. The club added £761 from their own funds towards the £7,610 total project cost.

The club have replaced pavers on the patio outside their clubhouse and added a ramp from the patio to the clubhouse to make accessing the clubhouse safer. They also purchased a roller to help with the maintenance of the bowling green.

Margaret Ginnelly, Committee Member - Funding at Hornsea Bowling Club, said: "The Hornsea Bowling Club is very grateful to East Riding of Yorkshire Council for awarding funding which was used to upgrade the footpaths and patio area to provide a safe and accessible entrance to the clubhouse.  The funding was also used to purchase a new roller for the bowling green which has helped improve the condition of the playing area."

Hornsea Promenade Bowling Club have completed the purchase of new equipment and the construction of a new paved area using £4,962.60 awarded from Commuted Sums. They also added £551.40 towards the total project cost of £5,514.

The club have created a paved area at the far end of the bowling green to provide easier access for members with mobility issues. In addition to these works, the club have also purchased new scoreboards, a scarifier, a strimmer and hedge cutters.

Graham Watson from Hornsea Promenade Bowls Club said: "On behalf of Hornsea Promenade Bowls Club, thank you to East Riding of Yorkshire Council for visiting. The award helps us to improve the green and make it safer for everyone.

"The grant was used to replace the grass bank, which used to get very slippery when it got wet, with paving and some new tools. Without your help, small clubs like ours would find it very difficult to continue and would slowly decline. I would advise other clubs to apply for grants, as it is not that difficult to do."

Councillor Leo Hammond, East Riding of Yorkshire Council's Cabinet member for planning, communities and public protection, said: "I am very pleased that these awards of Commuted Sums from local housing developments as a condition of their planning approval will be able to help these three organisations in Hornsea. From play equipment to bowling, Commuted Sums can make a real difference and significantly improve the quality of life in areas across the East Riding."
