The brand new Active Withernsea Get Going Grants initiative has supported its first successful applicant, helping a local karate class expand its offering to give more people the chance to experience the physical and social benefits of karate.

The Get Going Grants scheme was set up by Active Withernsea to offer support to local individuals, groups and organisations to help develop new and innovative physical activity ideas.

The scheme aims to empower more people from across the community to bring their ideas to life to help create more activity opportunities for people in Withernsea.

The Withernsea Karate Club applied for a grant to help them put on three blocks of free karate taster sessions across the summer. The great news is the first course of taster sessions that took place last month sold out and the second round of taster sessions are currently in full swing, with the last sessions taking place towards the end of August. The tasters have been hugely popular with people of all ages attending the fun sessions.

Emma Kelly, Active Withernsea development and implementation lead, said: “The scheme offers a chance to support people and groups and bring their physical activity ideas to life.

“The karate taster sessions have been a huge success and we want to help as many people as possible, working together to create a happier, healthier, more Active Withernsea.”

Jon Dimberline, Withernsea Karate Club, said: “It’s been great working with Active Withernsea, they helped me through every stage of the grants process. Thanks to the support from the Get Going Grants scheme we’ve been able to host the free taster sessions.

“I would recommend that any sports groups or individuals, with ideas, who need support come forward and contact the Active Withernsea team.”

Get Going Grants accepts bids from groups, individuals and organisations for support or resources from £50 up to £1,000. To qualify for support ideas groups or individuals need to have a line of sight to physical activity. People need not worry if they haven’t applied for something like this before as the team is on hand to provide support every step of the way.
