Tennis star Nick Kyrgios charged with assault of former girlfriend, report says

July 05, 2022

Tennis star Nick Kyrgios has been charged with assaulting his former girlfriend, media in Australia has reported.

The charge refers to an alleged assault of a former girlfriend in December 2021 with Kyrgios due to appear in court in Canberra next month.

An ACT policing spokesperson in Canberra said: "ACT Policing can confirm a 27-year-old Watson man is scheduled to face the ACT Magistrates court on the 2nd of August in relation to one charge of common assault following an incident in December 2021."

The world number 40 is currently playing in the UK and has reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon.

A legal representative for Kyrgios claimed he had not yet been charged as he has not appeared in court.

They added that he is "committed to addressing any and all allegations once clear".

The Canberra Times reports that it is understood that the charge relates to an allegation that the tennis star grabbed his former partner Chiara Passari.

It added that barrister Jason Moffett, from Key Chambers, confirmed to the paper he had been briefed in the matter and his client was aware of the charge.

Mr Moffett told the paper the charge was "in the context of a domestic relationship", adding that "the nature of the allegation is serious, and Mr Kyrgios takes the allegation very seriously".

Kyrgios will play Chile's Cristian Garin in a quarter-final match on Wednesday.

He has been marred in controversy in recent days with fines for his conduct at the tournament.

The tennis star received a $10,000 (£8,260) punishment after he admitted to spitting in the direction of a spectator who had heckled him during his first-round tie against Briton's Paul Jubb.

He was fined a further $4,000 (£3,300) for swearing during Saturday's fiery clash with Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Kyrgios also broke the strict dress code at Wimbledon when he wore red Air Jordan trainers and a red cap for an on-court interview following his win yesterday.
