January 03, 2022

A teenager has been charged with murder following the stabbing of 15-year-old Zaian Aimable-Lina, police have said.

Zaian was stabbed in the heart last Thursday evening and died shortly after officers arrived at the scene in Croydon, south London.

A 15-year-old was arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday and taken to a south London police station, the Metropolitan Police said.

The youth - who has not been named because of his age - has now been charged and is due to appear before magistrates in Bromley on Tuesday.

Scotland Yard said Zaian's family has been informed. They are being supported by specialist officers.

Police said they were made aware of an assault at Ashburton Park shortly after 7pm on 30 December.

Officers found Zaian suffering from stab injuries and provided first aid prior to the arrival of an ambulance, but the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene at 7.36pm.

Police initially arrested a 15-year-old boy on suspicion of murder on Friday.

He was taken to a south London police station and later released on bail to a date in late January.

A post-mortem held on Saturday gave Zaian's cause of death as a stab wound to the heart.

Detective Chief Inspector Richard Leonard has said that his death had sent "shockwaves through the local community".

A second fatal stabbing, during which a 16-year-old boy was killed in Yiewsley, west London, took place less than an hour later. A 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder in that case on Sunday.

It was the 30th teenage homicide in London in 2021 - a new record.
