Speeding driver Scott Gilligan jailed over fatal head-on crash near Barrhead

November 15, 2023

A speeding motorist who caused the death of a taxi driver in a head-on crash has been jailed for seven-and-a-half years.

Scott Gilligan, 35, had no insurance when he was spotted driving "at speed and aggressively and erratically" ahead of the fatal collision on 14 June 2021.

Gilligan's car rammed straight into Edward Cullen's cab after moving onto the wrong side of the A736 near Barrhead in East Renfrewshire.

Pedestrian Margaret Mansell, 60, was struck by Mr Cullen's vehicle during the incident and was propelled through a hedge.

Mr Cullen, 55, died in hospital three months later.

At the High Court in Glasgow on Tuesday, judge Lady Stacey said: "Mr Cullen lost his life and nothing that I can say or do can do anything to take away the grief that the Cullen family have felt since it happened and will continue to feel.

"His family have been left bereft.

"I have read the impact statement from Mrs Cullen who feels that her future has been taken away."

Ms Mansell suffered serious injuries, including fractures to an arm and her ribs, a collapsed lung and injured kidney.

Lady Stacey said the crash has had a "lasting effect on her life".

She said: "All of that has had a considerable effect on Mrs Mansell's life as she now requires to attend her doctor regularly for review and will have to do so for the rest of her life.

"Previously she had been in good health but now feels that her physical injuries and the psychological impact of the accident have left her feeling anxious and not the woman she was."

Gilligan pleaded guilty last month to causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving.

The court heard Gilligan was found to have been driving at 69mph in a 40mph zone and had been trying to overtake a small van at the time of the collision.

Lady Stacey said: "You were driving your mother's car, on a road that you knew well.

"I know you have watched the video and cannot explain why you tried to overtake.

"You accept you did not have insurance. I accept that you have thought about what you did that day and that you are remorseful."

Gilligan suffered fractures to his feet, neck, spine and left wrist.

Lady Stacey said: "In mitigation you were injured seriously and have been left suffering pain.

"I accept you have shown remorse."

Gilligan, who had previous road traffic convictions, was also banned from driving for nine years and nine months.
